Functions of the digestive system

The digestive system is the system whose function is to break down the complex food into a simpler form that can easily absorb into the body.
The digestive tract is a lengthy sequence of hollow tubular organs joined from the mouth to the anus is about 9 meters long. In a healthy human adult, the digestion process can take between 24 to 72 hours. Physiology of food digestion varies between individuals and affected by the food characteristics and meal size.

Digestion Process

The digestion process involves the contribution of various hormones, enzymes, and chemicals for proper digestion and absorption of the food.
Digestion process is a sequence of the process that starts by mixing of the food with digestive juices that travels through the digestive tract, during which breakdown of large complex molecules of food into smaller simple molecules. Digestion begins in the mouth, when you chew and swallow, and is complete in the small intestine.

Most of us believe that the digestion process starts, once the food reaches the mouth. However, whether you believe or not, the actual digestion process starts once you smell or see a favorite food whose taste you love most.

Just with the smell or sight of your favorite food, your brain instructs to start the digestion process by beginning to salivate.
